SHIFTING GEARS FOR GREENER SUBURBS

Our aim is to turn cities and towns into greener, cleaner places to live and work by supplying an alternative mode of transport that’s not only convenient, affordable and fun – but also contributes to lower CO2emissions and cleaner air, not to mention less traffic congestion.

SHIFTING GEARS WITH A LITTLE HELP

GreenCycles are electric bicycles - or E-bikes - that help you explore the world of cycling without being super fit - and having to spend large sums of money. GreenCycles E-bikes look just like conventional bikes, but are fitted with an electric motor and a lithium battery that you charge like a cellphone. You can ride them like a typical bike, but as soon as a hill approaches, turn the key, twist the throttle and off you go - no sweat. E-bikes provide all the gain of conventional cycling, but with decidedly less pain.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR CONNECTED CITIES

For amateur cyclists and people that would like to get into cycling, but aren’t all that fit, GreenCycles are a perfect introduction to a healthier lifestyle. After all, you’re a lot more likely to use a bike that you know won’t have you huffing and puffing all the way home.

They’re perfect for popping to the shops or tootling around the neighbourhood - and you don’t need a license to ride one. GreenCycles even offers a fold-up E-bike that’s perfect for commuters who currently park their cars and take the Gautrain. Simply fold up your bike, pop it in a bag and take it on the train with you.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR LESS CONGESTION

Residents of urban hotspots like Sandton and Rosebank, and trendy suburbs like Parkhurst, will tell you that parking is already a nightmare, and it’s only getting worse. As our suburbs and cities expand, traffic congestion will intensify. We either build more parking lots and put up with the increasing noise and pollution, or we shift gears and consider a more future-focused alternative.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR CLEANER AIR

E-bikes are currently the most energy efficient means of transport available. They emit 30 times less CO2 than a small car - with zero emissions when in manual mode. They’re also blissfully quiet. With our ever-increasing traffic congestion, E-bikes are one of the quickest ways to get around - and you don’t have to drive around looking and paying for parking. More people on E-bikes means fewer cars on the roads - and cleaner air for all of us to breath.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR A RELIABLE ALTERNATIVE

GreenCycles E-bikes are fitted with a lithium battery that you charge like you would a cellphone. The average E-bike can go up to 60km on a single charge - depending on the rider’s weight and the terrain. If you pedal, the range is extended. And if you run out of charge or something goes wrong with the motor, you can simply ride it home manually. They’re also quite fast – up to 30km/h without touching the pedals – but you could use the gears and pedal power to go even faster.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR AFFORDABLE TRANSPORT

Requiring between 200 and 250Wh to travel around 30kms, a GreenCycles E-bike is far more affordable to run than any other mode of motorized transport – and you don’t have to worry about dirty fossil fuels or the skyrocketing oil price. With renewable energy becoming more and more accessible, E-bikes represent a genuinely sustainable alternative to cars and motorcycles. Apart from the battery which would need to be replaced every two and a half to three years, the running costs are significantly lower than any other form of transport other than conventional cycling or walking.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR A BIKE-FRIENDLY JOBURG

In case you hadn’t heard, our city is set to become bicycle-friendly. Within the next few years, Joburgers will be able to cycle or walk from Sandton to Alexandra, from Orlando to Noordgesig and from Rosebank to Sandton through Melrose Arch or Parkview. These are all part of the plans the City of Johannesburg is putting into place to change the face of transport in the city and to make it more cycle and pedestrian-friendly.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR A CAR-FREE SANDTON

This October, which is National Cycling Month, they’re even closing Sandton CBD to cars for the entire month while the City of Johannesburg hosts the world’s second ever ‘EcoMobility World Festival and Exhibition’– a month-long car-free district event.

SHIFTING GEARS FOR A BETTER WORLD

At GreenCycles, we believe in the power of collaboration. We believe it’s up to partnerships between individuals, municipalities, big brands and small businesses to work together to solve some of the problems we all face. Problems like underdeveloped infrastructure. Overpopulated cities. Soaring petrol prices. Unreliable public transport. And roads that simply can’t accommodate the ever- increasing influx of private cars. We already have a number of smaller partners – but we’re always up for working collaboratively with other local businesses.
